6 garden games for kids and adults

With the summer stretching out ahead of us, now is the time to get the ball rolling!

Summer is the ideal time to get out into the garden or head to the park and have fun. Playing games and having a good time is one of the best ways to bond as a family (and entertain your summer guests). And what better way to spice up a picnic or end a lazy afternoon than having a championship tournament or a non-competitive, fun activity? You have a chance to reconnect with your inner child and the kids will love your undivided attention.

We’ve collated our pick of the best garden games, from family classics like pétanque and badminton, to some less traditional types of outdoor entertainment.

1. A game that holds water

We’ll bet that you have some fun memories of a water fight on a hot summer’s day in somebody’s garden. And wouldn’t you love to pass on a fun memory to the next generation?

If the kids are very young, you might want to go for a small and innocent model before you jump the gun. There’s something fishy and fun about these water pistols…

If the kids are little bit older and grown-ups are playing too, you’ll probably want to take out the bigger water guns that are wilder and more fun. A water cannon with extra water supplies will win the day for sure.

All that’s left to say is show respect, remember to wear sunscreen and – watch your back!

2. Let's have some fun in the pool!

  • The hot summer days are here and what better way to cool off than in cold water? And of course there's no shortage of fun - grab your popsicle stick air mattress and enjoy the sun! Meltingly beautiful...

3. True classics

  1. Now you’re probably familiar with timeless games such as beach tennis, badminton and pétanque. Competing against each other and keeping track of the score is always great fun!

If you don’t have anyone to play ball with, we’ve got your back. Blowing bubbles, building your own plane and practicing the skip ball are all things you can do together and on your own.

  1. Pro tip! Create a hula swing ring competition. Allow yourself to practice for 5 minutes before you see who can keep the swing ring going for the longest time. Take a short break before you compete again and wait to hold the grand finale until the end of the day.

The prize is optional, of course, but may we suggest an ice cream for the winner – along with the incredible honour?

4. Get active

Many children get bored quickly if they are not active enough... And let's be honest, adults too. The Trampoline game is the perfect game for the garden and the beach. So get your stuff together and see who wins the game!

5. In concert – form a picnic band

  1. Now this is a whole new ball game. In fact, it doesn’t involve a ball at all, but it might be music to your ears. You see, life is a picnic and a picnic that doesn’t carry a tune is no fun at all. So, bring a bunch of instruments and warm up your vocal cords. You can take turns playing the different instruments to see where your true talents lie. Who knows, by sunset a new picnic band may have seen the light of day.

6. Beat the heat

Memory games are a mental workout like no other. And a perfect game to beat the heat this summer! You can play them alone or challenge your friends and family to a game. But be warned - it can get quite heated as you play against the clock to see who can match all the cards first.
